The artist duo Bounoure&Genevaux, a working and living couple based in the South of France, has developed an original work based on folding and cutting. From a childish gesture such as folding small pieces of paper, are born large colorful or mirrored compositions, entitled "folded canvas". The artists themselves create their works in large format, folded with four hands, working in total synergy. They draw their colors and inspiration directly from the Mediterranean landscape.
Behind each work are hidden the motifs resulting from the fold that the duo of artists discovered, guided by intuition. The fold is at the origin of the forms created. Fold, cut, unfold, and the shape appears as if by magic. The fold allows the multi-pli-cation of a form by symmetry, this one then invading all the space.
Their work questions our perception of reality. The works act as sensitive surfaces, the shadow of the folds revealing nuances of colors or reflections always changing. As for a landscape every day different. The spectator is invited to move in the space that extends beyond the work : this movment is necessary to understand the work. In the mirror works, the image recomposed by the folds seems unreal, whereas it is not. The mirror acts as a fold, and the folds acts as a mirror.
